Senior User Researcher – GDS | Central Government | BPSS Eligible

We’re supporting a major Central Government programme seeking an experienced Senior User Researcher to join a multidisciplinary digital team delivering critical public services. This is an excellent opportunity to influence the design and delivery of user-centred services that have a meaningful impact on citizens across the UK.

• Contract Length: 12 Months
• Rate: Up to £554 per day
• IR35 Status: Inside IR35
• Location: Remote with occasional travel to London
• Clearance: Must be eligible for BPSS

Essential Experience

• Proven experience working as a Senior User Researcher within agile, multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong understanding of GDS standards, user-centred design principles and the Government Service Manual.
• Extensive experience planning, conducting and analysing qualitative and quantitative user research.
• Ability to select and apply appropriate research methodologies across different delivery phases.
• Experience translating complex research findings into actionable insights and recommendations.
• Skilled in presenting research outcomes to a range of stakeholders, including senior leadership.
• Experience working closely with Service Designers, Interaction Designers, Content Designers, Product Managers and Delivery Managers.
• Strong knowledge of accessibility, inclusive research practices and designing for diverse user needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead user research activities across complex government digital services.
• Plan and deliver research throughout discovery, alpha, beta and live phases.
• Identify user needs, behaviours and pain points through evidence-based research.
• Synthesize findings into clear insights to inform service and product decisions.
• Champion user-centred design practices across multidisciplinary teams.
• Support service assessments and ensure research aligns with GDS standards and best practice.
• Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the wider research community.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience delivering within Central Government.
• Experience supporting services through GDS Assessments.
• Strong understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles.
• Experience within Healthcare, NHS or wider Health sector digital programmes would be highly desirable.
• Experience researching complex, high-volume citizen-facing services.
