AI Engineer (Back End)

£560 per day (Inside IR35) | 12-Month Contract | Remote with Occasional London Travel

We are seeking an experienced AI Engineer (Back End) to support a major government transformation programme, developing the AI-powered services, APIs, and platforms that underpin next-generation public sector digital solutions.

This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge AI technologies, designing and building scalable backend components that enable intelligent, secure, and resilient user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain AI-enabled backend services and applications
• Build scalable APIs, microservices, and integration layers to support AI-powered digital products
• Develop and optimise services that leverage LLMs, generative AI, and machine learning capabilities
• Integrate AI platforms and services into enterprise-grade architectures
• Collaborate with front-end, product, data, and cloud engineering teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
• Ensure solutions meet government requirements for security, resilience, performance, and scalability
• Contribute to architecture, code quality, testing, and DevOps best practices

Essential Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a Back End Engineer/Developer delivering modern cloud-native applications
• Experience developing and deploying AI-enabled services or applications
• Strong programming skills in technologies such as Python, Java, C#, Node.js, or Go
• Experience building RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven architectures
• Knowledge of integrating LLMs, AI platforms, and machine learning services into production environments
• Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
• Experience working within UK Government or Public Sector environments (essential)
• Eligible to obtain and maintain BPSS clearance

Desirable Experience

• Experience supporting or developing backend services for mobile applications
• Knowledge of containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and DevSecOps practices
• Familiarity with vector databases, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and AI agent frameworks
