Role: User Researcher
Rate: £450 p/d (Via Umbrella)
Location: Fully Remote
Duration: 1-6 months

We are looking for a User Researcher with strong Government Digital Service (GDS) experience to help design and improve user-centred digital services. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure services meet user needs and comply with GDS standards.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a User Researcher within GDS or UK public sector projects
  • Strong knowledge of the GDS Service Standard and service assessments
  • Experience running usability testing, interviews, surveys, and workshops
  • Ability to communicate insights clearly to varied audiences
  • Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct user research across the service life-cycle (discovery, alpha, beta, live)
  • Use a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Translate research findings into clear, actionable insights
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, developers, and stakeholders
  • Ensure research aligns with GDS Service Standard and best practice
  • Support teams in making evidence-based, user-centred decisions

      Technical & Delivery Expectations:

          The Opportunity

          An experienced Technical Author is required to create, update, review, and maintain high-quality Technical Publications for customers in the UK and internationally.

          You’ll work closely with customers, internal teams, and suppliers to ensure documentation is accurate, compliant, and consistently meets high standards. Publications will align with relevant MOD requirements and recognised standards such as JSPs, S1000D, and applicable military or defence standards.

          This role suits someone who is detail-focused, collaborative, and comfortable working in regulated and security-conscious environments.

          Key Responsibilities

          • Own and manage a wide range of Technical Publications, including:

            • User and operator manuals

            • Maintenance manuals

            • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

            • Installation and assembly guides

            • Release notes

            • Technical Service Bulletins and safety notices

            • Disposal instructions

            • Training manuals

            • Specifications and data sheets (including hazard logs)

          • Peer review documentation and contribute to quality assurance activities

          • Support the development of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) artefacts, including ILS plans

          • Produce regulatory and safety documentation as required

          • Contribute to technical authoring for bids, tenders, and quotations

          • Collaborate with internal teams (including engineering, logistics, quality, compliance, and commercial functions) and external stakeholders

          • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including the development of customer support processes and documentation standards

          • Undertake additional duties appropriate to experience and qualifications to support business needs

          Education & Qualifications

          • Degree, HND, or HNC qualification (or equivalent experience)

          Knowledge, Skills & Experience

          • Previous experience in a Technical Author role

          • Working knowledge of JSPs and S1000D

          • Experience using Simplified Technical English (STE)

          • Understanding of through-life support standards, such as:

            • DEF STAN 00-600, 00-40, 00-42

            • Mil Std 217F

            • KiD

          • Knowledge of ITIL (v3 or v4) is beneficial
